In March 2010, Libre published their first English-language translation of one of their publications direct-to-Kindle, CJ Michalski’s Delivery Cupid.1 This was followed by the formation of Animate USA’s e-book distribution arm, which mainly republished expired licenses from previous English publishers.
Following the closure of Central Park Media, and their BL imprint Be Beautiful, in 2009, there was a void in the BL/yaoi manga market with a lot of Libre (formerly Biblos) publications falling by the wayside. This changed the following year when Libre entered the North American market with Delivery Cupid.
Using Animate USA for distribution, Libre began publishing previously out-of-print English licenses digitally for Kindle, roughly four a month.2 In addition to publishing English editions, Animate USA also published some Japanese editions direct-to-Kindle:
- Embracing Love, Vol. 14 (final volume) – Youka Nitta
- Awkward Silence, Vol. 1 – Hinako Takanaga
- See You in the School of the Muse, Vols. 1-2 – Makoto Tateno
Along with their full volume releases, Animate USA also published some series by chapter, or in parts, specifically series left incomplete by previous publishers, as well as individual one-shots by prominent BL mangaka.
In October 2011, Viz Media announced that they were partnering with Libre, and Animate, to establish a new subsidiary called SuBLime.3 SuBLime ultimately took over distribution rights for some of Animate USA’s titles, which they re-released on their website and on e-book platforms.4
Animate USA released their last direct-to-Kindle publications in April 2012. Animate International was founded in November 2020, a contemporary version of what Animate USA once was.
